These are some of the sources behind the information in this wiki. They are the archives, grammars, ethnographies, and living community programs where Owens Valley Paiute is documented, described, taught, and kept alive.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Older works use older names. Much of the scholarly literature calls the language Eastern Mono or Monache rather than Owens Valley Paiute.
- Sources reflect their times. The early ethnographies (especially Steward's) were written by outside observers in the 1930s. They preserve invaluable detail, but the framing and word choices are of their era. Read them alongside the work of the community programs below.
- Start with people. Archives and grammars are wonderful, but the living language lives with the Nüümü.
