Owens Valley Paiute Dictionary (2nd ed.)
The Owens Valley Paiute Dictionary, second edition (2026) by Glenn Nelson Jr., is a print reference of OVP words and their meanings. It is a community-rooted dictionary, compiled by a speaker for speakers and learners, and a companion to the online Kubishi Dictionary.
The dictionary was created from a combination of multiple resources that reference fluent Paiute elders from the Owens Valley and areas outside the valley which represent the eastern dialect of the language spoken by the Owens Valley Paiute and Western Mono peoples. A large portion of the references have been learned from the Owens Valley Career Development archives, largely from fluent Paiute elder Norma Nelson (Bishop). Others whose language is preserved and documented within include: Maude Shaw (Bishop), Ruth Brown (Bishop), Andy Garrison (Round Valley), Clara Rambeau (Big Pine), Sam Kinney (Bishop), Albert Meredith (Benton), Effie Meredith (Round Valley), Tom Stone (Big Pine), Minnie Chiatovich (Oasis), Helen McGee (Bishop), Marjorie Jones (Bishop), Louie Stewart (Big Pine), May Meredith (Benton), Roy Chiatovich (Bishop), Rob Harry (Oasis), Harry Miller (Independence), Minnie Williams (Bishop), Jim Wright (Round Valley), and Allen Rambeau (Big Pine).
